Rania Khan - Does Not Win Award For Work Against Lap Dancing Clubs

Poor Rania. She was privileged to have been nominated as a finalist in the Local Government Information Units Young Councillor of the Year Award. Her blog posting on the subject is a reprint of an a local press article that trumpets the fact that the nomination has been made on the back of her work to smear and vilify the boroughs lap dancing clubs.

On the big night, we were all waiting to see if she won. Rania was waiting as well, in fact she went along to the prize giving.

She didn't win, the award went to Cllr Tahfeen Sharif of Luton Borough Council.

Being nominated by Mayor Lutfur Rahman probably did her no favours at all, but another way of looking at is that no one is going to award a councillor for....

Campaigning for 5 years to get almost 600 local residents made redundant by closing long established and well run businesses,
Denying the council thousands of pounds of income in terms of lost business rates,
Trying to close a long established and well run gay venue,
Making the council commit probably hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal fees defending what will be a  highly dubious decision when it is made.

So Pro Tip for Rania: Awards and recognition go to people that build communities, not to those that try destroy them.

Hey. I must be slipping, I almost forget the Daily Telegraph article about her....that probably didn't help her cause either. I wonder if she still 'luvs her weapons'.....?
